Connect your Firebase project to Symplify to send App Push messages to Android and iOS apps through Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM). This article shows how to add the Firebase service account key in Symplify. For how to integrate the SDK in your app, see the API documentation.
Note: Symplify uses the Firebase Cloud Messaging HTTP v1 API, which requires a service account key. Google shut down the legacy FCM API in 2024, so apps without a service account can't receive push messages.
Create a private key in Firebase
- Log in to the Firebase console and open your project.
- Click the gear icon and select Project settings.
- Go to the Service accounts tab and click Generate new private key.
- Confirm with Generate key. A JSON file with the key is downloaded. Store it securely: anyone with the file can send messages to your app.
Add the key in Symplify
- Go to Settings > Integration > Connected Apps > App Push.
- To add a new app, click Add and select Firebase. To update an existing app, click the gear icon on the app's row and select Edit.
- Fill in the fields:
- Name: a name for the app in Symplify.
- App Id: the app ID your app uses when it registers with Symplify.
- API Key: leave empty. It was only used by the legacy FCM API.
- Main activity: the Android activity that opens when a contact taps the message, for example .MainActivity.
- Service account: paste the full content of the JSON file you downloaded from Firebase.
- Click Save.
Test the setup
Send a test message from Symplify to a device with your app installed, and check that it arrives.
